Favorite Video Games
I think that my two favorite games would be Rogue Legacy and Hot Line Miami.
Rogue Legacy very similar to Hot Line Miami in many ways: they are both action packed, they both require you to repeat the content until you master it, and they are both low budget games. The main difference between Rogue Legacy and Hotline Miami is the theme. Rogue Legacy has a western fantasy theme and is heavily inspired by the old very had rogue-like games (as the name implies). The game is a platformer were you control a family line of knights trying to cut their way into a cursed tower.
The game creates a balance between the need for progression and skill by making all attacks from enemies dodge-able but also gives you the opportunity to powering up your character to increase your abilities and therefore making the challenges easier. You can probably win the game with the character you start with, but that would be too hard and it would require an incredible amount of time. You can customize your character in a number of ways: increasing their stats, giving them spells and abilities and increasing their mobility. The customization of your mobility is a very interesting aspect of the game, as you can go for a build with a quadruple jump, triple dash, four second levitation or just the more balanced double jump, dash, levitation, sprint and haste. This, coupled with the different classes like mage and rogue, makes the game very good at fitting different play styles.
The game is not that long content-wise, but the difficulty makes you spend a substantial amount of time playing before you can get to the end. The levels are randomly put together from a series of pre-designed blocks . This keeps the game fresh as the hours pile on, but it can still feel tedious as you are grinding through the monsters to get enough gold for your next upgrade. But if you like a challenging game that rewards you for trying over and over to get a handle on the controls and become a real master, then you might just like Rogue Legacy.
Hot Line Miami is an action game that imitates arcade style and brings us lots of disturbing fun. The game focuses on a probably crazy/drug addicted protagonist that takes orders from his phone to go to Russian mafia hideouts and eliminated every living thing on the building. You move around picking up weapons that others have left behind and then you can either go on a crazy rampage or try to meticulously kill each guard. The crazy dreams of the schizophrenic protagonist will keep you interested as you slash your way through loads of mafia guys, its lots of fun.
The simplicity of game is also interesting. The fact that you can make simple AI and simple assets while still creating a great experience is one of the things that keeps me optimistic about dedicating myself to create a game with little or no budget. I think this game is a great example of one great truth about game design, expensive assets don't make a game, good design does.
There are two lessons that I can take out of the game. First, keeping a constant theme is important for creating an immersive experience. All the way from the music to the clothing of the characters, I think the designers of Hot Line Miami nailed the 1980 crazy, drug filled vibe. Secondly, making gameplay mechanically simple but with a lot of different flavors makes your game accessible while keeping it interesting. Hot Line Miami's actions are simple, pick up weapon and use weapon, but the the wide variety of weapons styles provides many different exiting ways to play the game.
